Steven Fraser is a painter and sculptor living in southern Ontario. A student of literature, horticulture and theology, Steve has worked in various media over the years - stone and wood sculpture, letter carving and garden design - always with the focus on humble, accessible material.

Through the use of plywood, burlap, oil and acrylics, Steve strives to create texture and depth in his work. "I want to be in the presence of a living thing," he says. "I want a piece of art to take a bite out of my psyche every time I walk by. I want it to tap me on the should and say, 'boo.'"

Influenced by Italy's Arte Povera movement, along with the aesthetic interests of Japan's Mono Ha school, Korea's Dansaekhwa, Norval Morriseau's Woodland School, the work of Antoni Tapies and Paterson Ewen, Steve emphasizes the art-making potential of everyday objects, believing that the local hardware store is the best art supply shop around.

Filtered through the old lens of southwestern Ontario agricultural communities, Steve's work celebrates the daily social and spiritual connections that have always sustained us.
